Looking through the Engagement Matrix documentation, I don’t see where its explicitly noted that we cannot use custom or inline events, however, that is my experience with the chart.
Is this expected functionality? Can I only use events as they are ingested into Amplitude on the Engagement Matrix?

That’s correct. Only the actual ingested events can be plotted in the Engagement Matrix as per current behavior.
Most probable reason could be the difficulty of calculating the %MAU and Avg times for each individual event constituting that one custom event.
