Transitioning from GA; why don't I understand Amplitude?

Hello, hoping someone can help…

Short form of the question:

I started to build a basic conversion funnel. Amplitude defaults to “by User” rather than GA’s default “by Session”. Where in the UI do I switch to conversion by session?
* Note, I totally get that some people prefer to think in terms of User, but we have micro goals we want to track in-session, as well as user-level macro goals.

Longer form of the question:

I’m transitioning from Google Analytics, and find the basics of the Amplitude UI to be utterly confusing. I know that Amplitude is supposed to be more “user friendly” than GA, but I’m finding the opposite is true.

I have to google/forum search everything. And rarely find answers. For example, do I need to set up a “raw view” with bot traffic, and a “main view” without? If not, why not? How do I handle bot traffic?

Time to conversion is another pain point. I select bins to be by “hours”, and the report displays by “minute”. Random.

Is there some sort of paradigm/difference of philosophical approach I’m not getting?

Hello @far1234!

Happy to help! There is an article in Amplitude’s blog that I would love to share with you asit explains GA vs. Amplitude: https://amplitude.com/blog/amplitude-vs-google-analytics

I started to build a basic conversion funnel. Amplitude defaults to “by User” rather than GA’s default “by Session”. Where in the UI do I switch to conversion by session?

Answer: In the documentation you can hold property values constant across all events you have included in the funnel. Amplitude offers a property session IDs which tracks sessions. If you hold this property constant the chart will read in sessions rather than users. Here is the documentation on this feature.

As an example chart: https://analytics.amplitude.com/demo/chart/new/31m41ri we can see that there have been ~360K sessions that have successfully gone through the funnel.

Bot Traffic: There is a FAQ article in the documentation that explains some options to exclude bot traffic from Amplitude. You can find the information, here.

Time to conversion: You can customize the bin size and the size of the intervals. For example, in this chart: https://analytics.amplitude.com/demo/chart/new/lu6bp88 the hours are from 0 - 10 seperated to 2.5 hour buckets. The documentation for this metric can be found, here.

Hi @eddie.gaona

This is a really belated reply, but I wanted to thank you for this response.

For anyone else who made this, I found it helpful to think of amplitude as a “user first” platform, whereas GA adopted a “sessions/pageviews first” approach. This helped me build reports, at least :)

Thanks again!
