Activation in software takes a customer from initial sign-up all the way to establishing a habit around the product. But from an instrumentation perspective, where does that start and end? Claudia Canamas-Donnelly, Senior Product Analyst at Appfire, says there are four key events to track:

  • Signed up
  • Setup moment
  • Aha moment
  • Habit moment

Here’s how it works:

“The Signup moment, someone creating an account on an app for the first time.

Followed by the Setup moment, which is the user has done things that sets them up for the aha moment. Usually means they have entered additional information or configured settings that they need in order to be able to get value from the app.

And we have the Aha! Moment. It's the first time that the user has experienced the core value proposition of the app .

And lastly, the Habit moment, this is the point where they've gotten that aha moment enough times that they've established a habit around getting value from our app, and we are pretty confident that we're  ingrained into their routine at this point.”

This is a snippet from Building a Single Source of Truth for Org-wide Activation Metrics, an ‘How I Amplitude’ series session with guest Claudia Canamas-Donnelly who explains how she created a process for aggregating metrics across almost 200 apps into a single Amplitude dashboard for her team’s Activation reporting use case.
