How to assess retention from first event trigger

I want to assess the retention after our activation event when the user first activates.

From what I understand amplitude retention looks at the first time a user triggers an even within the set period, rather than ever.

I’m looking at the change over time view and from what I can tell, if I put our activation event as the starting event and return event, it will show me any users that have triggered that event in the given week, regardless of whether they have triggered the starting event before

Instead, I want to see on any given week what the % of users that trigger our activation event for the first time then return to do the event in W1 (i.e. 7-14 days later)

You understood correctly :) Do you have access to “historical count” as a filter? This is what you need, then set it to 1st. That feature is only available on some plans.
