Email as a User Property Allowed?

Hey hi how are you?
Are we allowed to pass user emails to Amplitude as custom properties or is it against GDPR policies?
If it's against, what are the best practices here? How do companies store emails? Do they hash them?

Best regards,

Hi @Alex Saifullin. Similar to other digital analytics tool vendors, Amplitude actively advises against passing Personally Identifiable Information into the tool...I assume this is still the case today given GDPR, etc. You could alternatively pass in, for example, hashed email addresses or similar. One thing I’d advise in addition is to have a conversation with your company’s Data Protection Officer to get their input on what they’re comfortable with you passing into Amplitude.

This article gives further into: https://amplitude.com/blog/understanding-privacy-and-analytics.

Dan.

Thank you Dan 😊
