How do dynamic cohorts work in historical graphs?

Hello,

I’ve created a dynamic cohort of users (“active users”) who performed a set of tracking events “set A” in the last 7 days.

When I create a new chart to see “active users” who performed a different set of tracking events “set B” over the last 60 days, how does the dynamic cohort behave?

  1. Does the dynamic cohort retroactively adjust to determine the set of users 60 days ago that performed the initial “set A” 60 days ago?
  2. ...or does the dynamic cohort define the set of “active users” as of today, and just look at that set list of users 60 days ago?

Example:

  • Create dynamic cohort is users who performed tracking event A in last 7 days.
  • As of today, I see 3 users with IDs: 345, 346, 347
  • I create a chart for tracking event B over the last 60-days
  • I apply a filter on users of the dynamic cohort
  • Will the chart only show me those 3 users? Let’s say users 345, 346, 347 only signed up two weeks ago. If I look at the chart, will I see 0 users of dynamic cohort with event b usage 60-days ago or could I potentially see older users (278, 279, 280) who would have met the criteria for the dynamic cohort at that time 60-days ago?

Hi @MikeL ! Welcome to the Amplitude Community and I’m happy to help

When you create a cohort and apply a cohort filter to a chart, you can think of the cohort filter pulling in the list of users who are in the cohort at the time of the query.

So yes, if the cohort only has 3 users (345, 346, 347), then the chart will only show you the 3 users provided that these 3 users did the Event B in the last 60 days.

If you meant to look at a segment of users whose 2nd action is relative to the date they did the Event in the left module, you might want to look into in-line cohorts:

https://help.amplitude.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040965352

For example, this chart is looking at users who did the Purchase event and also did a Play song or video within 3 days leading to the Purchase event: https://analytics.amplitude.com/demo/chart/new/4d6zblf

Hope this helps!

Thanks @belinda.chiu, this is helpful!

Was hoping to avoid having to input user conditions in line on new reports, but this helps.
