How long does Amplitude retain (and make accessible)our user/event data?
Hey
Afaik, Amplitude supports unlimited data retention right from their Free Plan onwards.
However, there are charting limits on how far you can go wrt time when visualizing your data in charts like Event Segmentation depending on your granularity.
eg. you can only visualize your daily metrics for the past 365 days. To increase the timeframe you would have to switch to weekly, which hits the max at last 52 weeks.
The highest granularity is quarterly which is capped at last 12 quarters. So essentially, at the moment you can graph a max of 3 year data with the quarterly granularity. Not quite sure if this depends on what plan you are on or is this a default cap.
If you are planning on having access and owning your raw data outside Amplitude, then here are a few options
- If you are a paid customer, then you can setup recurring exports to the cloud destination of your choice ( Amazon S3, Snowflake, Google Cloud Storage, ) directly from the Amplitude UI.
- If you are not on a paid plan, then you can also leverage the Export API and create your own custom ETL pipeline.
Hope this helps!
Hi
A few additional notes:
- More details on how much data can be visualized for each date interval option can be found here: https://help.amplitude.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002923888#h_bee3799c-cd45-44f2-adde-b7c06bc5a8b4
- As Saish said, the maximum amount of data you could potentially visualize at a time is 12 quarters of data (aka 3 years), but this doesn’t necessarily mean that it must be the most recent 3 years of data. You can use offsets or “Between” to look at more specific period of data prior to the last 3 years if needed.
Let us know if you have any questions!
A follow up question. Is it possible to change the setting for how long Amplitude stores the data and delete data older than e.g 6 months?
Kind regards
/J
Hey
I don’t think this is currently possible within Amplitude UI as a self serve setting. But this could be something Amplitude Support can do on their backend for a customer if you reach out to them.
