What is the difference between Segment’s Cloud Mode vs. Device Mode? 

Within our Segment account, there is a difference type of events Amplitude automatically collects depending on if they are being sent “Cloud only” vs. “Server side only”.

 

  

 

  • Please note that the Amplitude destination in Segment that supports device-mode has been succeeded by "Amplitude Actions".
    • We strongly recommend using this destination.
  • While device-mode continues to be available, it uses a very old version of the Amplitude Analytics SDK.
    • See this doc for info about switching your destination to Amplitude Action.

 

 

If we are going to use device-mode, will we have all the fields that currently exist in Amplitude? Fields like location, os, platform, traits, etc? 

Thanks for this question, @Luisa. :relaxed: Somehow the team missed it. Were you able to find an answer? I’m looping in platform specialist @ning.chang, who can take a closer look if needed. 

Anyone reading this in 2024 (or beyond): Please note that the advice that strongly recommends using cloud mode is out of date. Moving forward you should be creating an Amplitude Actions destination, which runs in cloud mode, but includes the ability to still get session_id set in your Amplitude events (see the above-linked documentation for details).
