Filing an idea per discussion here.
The ideas proposed (some or all of these) are:
- Allow displaying more than 30 group by items on a chart. Up to 50 or 100 would be great.
- Change defaults to select / show more than the top 12 items in the breakdown table by default. (you can select up to 30 but 12 seems to be the initial default - defaulting to the max would be better - it’s easy to overlook the fact that the chart is omitting data that is available in the breakdown table).
- Display a message/warning above the chart when data is missing / not displayed due to hitting the max items capable of being displayed.
Background:
A scenario where it’s useful to have more than 30 items on the chart is when you’re grouping by sparse data. We have a chart where we group by first-time users and show a chart bar only for the day where they first logged in. Or think in terms of a stacked bar chart for when users hit a specific product milestone.
If user activity is sparse with each top user active only 1 day over the period, then it’s not overwhelming to chart 50 or even 100 users. 30 group by’s with each one active on a different day over a 30d period would only be a stacked bar chart with one bar in each column.
I do see how the devs could be concerned over running out of unique colors for the legend. However unique colors aren’t a requirement for us, considering that there is hover-over identification of data labels.
