Funnel for task completion

I want to build a funnel for a new feature which is essentially a task…

The task is:

Assigned to a user by another user
Completed by that user
Reviewed by the first user

So I can't use Amplitude's userID-based-funnel.. I need a custom funnel based on the TaskID.

Is there a way to do this yet?

(I know I can use segmentation to compare event counts in the same period but hoping for a more accurate method that actually uses the TaskID)

While Amplitude's standard userID-based funnel doesn't directly support this use case, However, you can still accurately model this “task” flow in **Funnel Analysis** as long as each event in the flow carries the same `TaskID` property.

**Using Event Properties**: If the TaskID is included as an event property across all relevant events (e.g., "Task Assigned," "Task Completed," "Task Reviewed"), you can use the "Holding Constant" feature In the advanced settings in Funnel chart to group events by TaskID. This tells Amplitude to only count paths where all steps share the same `task_id`, so you’re effectively tracking completion of the _same task_ through the funnel rather than mixing different tasks a user might touch. (Screenshot attached below for your reference)

A couple of important notes:

- The funnel will still be **counted at the user level** (i.e., how many users moved through the steps), but the “hold property constant” setting ensures each conversion path is tied to a single `TaskID`.
- If you instead need pure **task-level** metrics (e.g., “what % of tasks assigned are eventually reviewed?” counted as tasks, not users), today you’d still need to approximate this via Segmentation (e.g., counting distinct `task_id` values per step) and comparing them, as you mentioned.
If you can confirm your events are instrumented with a shared `task_id` property on all three steps, the “hold property constant” approach in Funnels is the most accurate method available for this workflow.

Unfortunately the users who assign the tasks do not complete them so it won't work to count at the user level.

I'll have to use segmentation and the events can only trigger once for each task so I shouldn't need the taskId.

I was hoping for a funnel based on TOTALS instead of UNIQUES I guess..

You’re exactly right that a standard **user-level funnel** won’t capture this workflow, since the person assigning the task is different from the person completing it, and possibly different again from the reviewer. So unfortunately we can’t currently build a true funnel that treats each task as the unit and is based purely on totals rather than uniques.

Amplitude allows you to switch between counting by unique users and event totals in funnel charts. When you select "Totals," Amplitude considers all conversion paths taken or attempted, not just the earliest/longest path per user. However, this still does not change the fundamental unit of analysis from user to task; it just changes how event occurrences are counted.

Given your setup, Event Segmentation really is the best available option. By charting Task Assigned, Task Completed, and Task Reviewed and looking at their event totals, you’ll still get a solid view of how many tasks reach each stage over time. It’s not a strict task-based funnel, but it should give you a practical and fairly accurate approximation.

I’m sorry that this specific use case isn’t currently supported in funnel charts. I know this isn’t a perfect fit for what you’re aiming to do, and I completely understand why a task-based funnel would be valuable here. Your feedback is really valuable to us, and we do take it seriously when thinking about how funnels and analysis can better support real-world setups like yours.
